Karement to appeal closure

Karement partied for the last time on Thursday 29th July.

After 6 years and 4 months, the night club based in Monaco's Grimaldi Forum closed its doors for the last time. News of Karement's imminent closure was reported in December 2009, followed by an announcement in February this year that the landlord was planning a new tapas bar called Cafe Llorca and had decided to end the lease. In spite of being given notice, Richard Borfiga, boss of Karement, has continued to run regular parties during July. But now the High Court has ordered him to leave the premises within 2 weeks.

Karement's 42 employees now face an uncertain future. Cafe Llorca's new managers have confirmed that those qualified to work in a restaurant may be taken on, however DJs, bouncers, and other employees classified as "night staff" are likely to be made redundant. For the time being, after the 2 week's notice, workers will be technically unemployed and paid 57% of their salary for a maximum of 6 months.

Some reports are saying that Karement's refusal to accept the ending of its lease led employees to cling to false hopes, while they could have been looking for another job. Even now, Borfiga is appealing the court decision, claiming that the night club was bringing in over 1 million euros in VAT for the Principality.
