New speed record for electric cars

Venturi continues to push the limits.

After proving an electric car can travel from Shanghai to Paris [1] Monaco's Venturi Jamais Contente created a new record on 24th August in Bonneville, Utah. With an electric motor of 800 hp and lithium ion batteries, the car sustained an average 495 km/h over 1km, and registered an official maximum speed of 515 km/h. The car was built in partnership with Ohio State University, driven by American Roger Schroer, and adds to the record established by Venturi in 2009 with a hydrogen fuel cell powered car (FIA world record, 487 km/h in September 2009).

Venturi will return to Bonneville in 2011 and 2012 to continue to push the limits for electric sports vehicles. President of Venturi Gildo Pallanca Pastor says this marks an important stage in the history of electric vehicles, remembering Camille Jenatzy's record of 100 km/h [2] 111 years ago in the first Jamais Contente. Both cars will be exhibited at the Paris Motor Show in October [3].
